After decades of abandonment, producers
such as the Lyraraki estate, are turning in
search of the forgotten wine treasures of the Cretan vineyard. Liatiko Aggelis is a pre-phylloxera vineyard on the eastern edge of Crete that was planted in the 1930s. In fact, it
is not just a rare vineyard, but a vineyard that
was in danger of disappearing. This particular
Liatiko Aggelis has unprecedented levels of
concentration and tannins in the mouth. But
much more behind the rescue of this vineyard
the family respects the unique wealth in their
hands by following a quiet vinification with an
absolutely light hand. The result is one of the
most terroir-driven, distinct and interesting
wines not only of Crete but of Greece as a
whole.
