Fashion can be a form of seduction, as the April 15, 1923, cover of the Paris Fashions Number suggests. George Wolfe Plank knows what will make the readers’ hearts beat faster, and it’s not the courteous beau at the right, but a dress with one of those “beneficent bows that came to the aid of the ladies of 1880.” Style, the magazine writes, follows the lead of women who set the mode by upsetting it. “When such a one buys, the midnight hour of that mode has struck, the coach turns into a pumpkin, and—But Cinderella’s never caught.”
